And I am back at work

I started working again last Friday. Off course things are super busy, but I have gotten a lot done since I have been back. It also helped that I left a very clean desk and practically a clean slate with everything balanced, booked and orderly.

On our last weekend of vacation, we went to a family gathering in the south of Iceland to visit Helgi’s mothers family. We had a blast! Here are some photos.

See those mountain looking things on the horizon? Yeah, those are islands called Vestmannaeyjar. You can see them pretty clearly when driving the south part of the main road around the country.

Helgi’s little cousins had loads of fun, and so did I!

Lopapeysafestival
In the evening and long into the bright summer night, there was a barbeque, some drinks and live music. And the place looked like a lopapeysa festival!

Rubber shoes, best investement in a long time.
I got myself some rubber shoes so my feet would not get wet. Best thing I have bought in a long time!

Prestsbakkakirkja
Prestsbakkakirkja. Old country churches are absolutely stunning and this one was just breathtaking.

I am working on some fun projects, both knitting and crochet. I will post again soon with some photo updates of what I have been working on lately, but here is a sneak peek.

Orange and brown seem to be my theme colours these days #knitting

Birta

I finished my lopapeysa last week. I have been wanting to make myself a lopapeysa for about 5 years, but I had difficult time picking out the pattern I wanted, the colors I wanted, the fit I wanted and what kind of wool mix I wanted to use. After some thought I was almost decided on using a mix of single ply plötulopi (unspun Icelandic wool) and einband (Icelandic lace wool) as I love that mix and it makes the most light and airy fabric that is still warm and nice. I even thought about substituting the lace wool with some alpaca or something luxurious and soft to go with the unspun wool.

For the last few months, I have been a regular at Litla Prjónabúðin as it is one of my favorite knitting stores and quite a few of my knitting friends are regulars there and there is a great area for sitting down with your WIP and have coffee and chat. It is close both to my office and my home so it is very handy to stop by after work or on my days off and meet with kindred spirits and pet some yarn and do some knitting. Litla Prjónabúðin (The Little Knitting Store) carries great yarn called Snældan. Faroese wool with Falkland wool mixed in it. It is softer than the Icelandic wool and after seeing some items knitted with it, I was sold. I had found the yarn I wanted to use for my lopapeysa. Knit with 5mm needles, I got the same gauge as for léttlopi so substituting Snældan was easy! Perfect!

Pattern: Birta by Bára Þórarinsdóttir
Yarn: Snaeldan Nappað tógv 3tr – grey, brown and yellow
Needles: 4.5mm and 5mm

The pattern is very classic, just what I had imagined. I am very happy with it and now I want more and have plenty of ideas. I am on a sweater  roll and have some lined up in my queue already, both for me, my daughters and some friends and family. If you can get this wool, I do recommend it. It knits up beautifully!

I only have 2 days left at work and then I am on summer holidays until July 4th! Oh the joy! The list of things to do while I am on vacation is long and fun and I am finally going to go through my stash and organize it properly and hopefully get it all photographed and into Ravelry.

I started a new MKAL, this time I am doing socks by Kamilla. The first clue came yesterday and I am almost done with it. I am also participating in Stephen West’s Summer Shawl KAL and am going to start by knitting Vertices Unite in the bigger version. I did some stash diving and picked out some yarns that that could work for the project. Me and the man arranged some color settings and I took some photos of them for me to look at and hopefully make the decision making a little easier. If you want to take a look, the photos are here and I would love to hear what is your favorite color setting!

I started another Mystery KAL! This one is by Rosemary (Romi) Hill and is also a shawl. If you want to join, you can find the info here on Ravelry.
I am using the grey (Uno) and orange (Spinni) yarn for my shawl and Karítas helped me wind them up with a huge smile on her face.

Sumarrós went to the yearly school dance in a dress that she designed and my mother sewed for her. She looked so beautiful!

Karítas got new knitted socks.

I have spent most of the weekend relaxing, knitting and today I baked a french chocolate cake and my mom came over for cake and coffee. I am knitting a lopapeysa for Karítas and decided to knit it top down this time and love it. The yoke is done and I am about to set aside the sleeve stitches.

Bits & Pieces – Sunday March 16th

I was sick this week with a stomach flu on Wednesday and Thursday. I am all better now and have spent the weekend relaxing and meeting good friends, a bit of cleaning and finishing up some projects.

Perfect Saturday with amazingly talented knitters
A very talented group of knitters met at Litla Prjónabúðin yesterday. It was a wonderful day and I look forward to doing it again as soon as possible. Kristín Hrund, Rodrigo Urðar & Gummi, Hildur Ýr and Sigurlaug. Dagga, the owner of the store is sitting next to Sigurlaug, but unfortunately got cropped out of the photo by mistake. I will get a better group photo next time.

Socks for my nephew Adrían
Pattern: Rye by tincanknits
Yarn: Novita 7 Veljestä
Needles: US 4 – 3.5 mm

I also finished a wool sweater (lopapeysa) for my older daughter, Sumarrós. I still have to put the zipper in it so I will post photos of it when it is all finished and I get my daughter to pose for a photo shoot.

I am now working on finishing the same socks as I did for Adrían for my younger daughter Karítas and Sumarrós wants a pair also. I also have wool ready for a lopapeysa for Karítas but we need to decide on a pattern.

New blanket finish

Me, my mom and my daughters went away to my grandfathers cabin on Wednesday and came home yesterday. It was wonderful to get away and we spent our time watching movies, soaking in the hot tub, playing cards and games, eating good food, watching the birds, drawing, my mother was sewing a dress for Sumarrós and I focused on finishing a blanket for a friend.

Skorradalur
Skorradalur, the view over the lake from the driveway to the cabin.

Kalaha match is on
My mother and daughters playing Kalaha. We love playing Kalaha, and Sumarrós is an awesome player. Off course she won almost every game (I won her once!)

The blanket has been a secret project since July last year. My very dear friend Hildur was at my house and wrapped herself in the Wave Blanket I made for Karítas last year. After that she expressed that she really wanted a blanket of her own, so me and our group of friends decided that we wanted to give her one. They bought the yarn and I made the blanket in between other projects. When I left on Wednesday I had about 70 squares left to do and I managed to finish the blanket on Friday night, boarder and all. It was made with a lot of love and warmth wrapped into every stitch and last night I walked over to Hildur’s house and gave it to her. She was very happy and wrapped the blanket around her and tells me she is still wrapped up in it, not about to let it go anytime soon.

Solid Granny Square Blanket

Solid Granny Square Blanket

Solid Granny Square Blanket

Solid Granny Square Blanket
Pattern: The classic granny square
Yarn: Stylecraft Special Double Knit (colors: bright pink, sunshine, lipstick, plum, royal, black and yaffa) except the neon green is Svarta Fåret Freja
Hook: 4.5mm

I used a little less than 2 skeins for all the colours except for the black one, I used a little more than 2 skeins of it as it is also used for the boarder. 420 squares, and I used Lucy’s amazing join as you go method to join the squares. The colours were very difficult to photograph, the orange and the green are neon colours but they look a bit washed out in the photos. They are much richer and nicer IRL so you just have to imagine how they really are.

Now I am focusing on some sock knitting, some test knitting for a friend and am about to start knitting wool sweaters for both myself and my daughters.

Sorting through the WIP cabinet

One of the things that I wanted to do in the new year was to go through both my WIP/UFO cabinet and my yarn stash. Today I went through the WIP/UFO cabinet and did some cleaning and organising. It was not as bad as I thought!

I took photos to show you what I have hidden in there. There is just one WIP that I can’t show you as it is top secret until it is done. But here goes, I am airing my whole WIP/UFO collection here.

2014-01-11 16.22.01
Here is the cabinet before I organised everything. And my notebook and some zip lock bags for some of the projects.

2014-01-11 16.23.42
All the bags are out and on the floor. What is in them? I had some idea, but wasn’t sure of all of it.

2014-01-11 16.24.33
Bjarki’s lopapeysa that I made for him needs some mending under the arms and I need to sew the zipper better as it has loosened with all the use it has gotten. This one did not go back into the cabinet as I am going to repair it tonight so that I can give it back to Bjarki next time he comes over.

2014-01-11 16.27.38

2014-01-11 16.30.28
The bed spread I am crocheting for our bed! It hasn’t gotten much attention lately, mainly because of my very secret WIP, but as soon as that is done, I imagine this will be my next focus piece. So neatly folded with all of the yarn, back into the cabinet it went to be ready for my attention.

2014-01-11 16.33.42
A crochet shawl. This is in fact not my project, Helgi is making it! I love the colours and the green is dyed by me. It went into it’s own project bag and back into the cabinet so that Helgi can grab it when he feels like it.

2014-01-11 16.54.45
Now, this one is almost done. Just the finishing touches left. But, it also needs a partner that is smaller and has a different colour where the purple one is. It is very high on my priority list to get these finished a.s.a.p.

2014-01-11 16.58.01
Various stuff for some yarn graffiti.

2014-01-11 16.59.39
Crochet curtains for a pub. Need to know if I should finish these or not.

2014-01-11 17.05.10
One sock for Karítas that I did ages ago, too small now so I am either making the other one and giving it to someone, or frogging it or using the yarn for something else, like socks in the right size for her!

2014-01-11 17.05.54
The start of a shawl. Frogged as I want to use the yarn for something else.

2014-01-11 17.06.26
One sock for myself. Need and want to finish the other one, just have been suffering from ‘second sock syndrome’ since I finished the first one.

2014-01-11 17.11.51
A cabled bag that I really want to finish, but I need to buy more yarn for it!

2014-01-11 17.14.32
BSJ that I started, then the cat got a hold of it and I couldn’t figure out how much had frogged so I frogged the whole thing and will use the yarn for something else.

I thought that there would be way more in there! And I am very happy that I just frogged the items that I knew I would never ever finish anyway. I put everything in their separate bags or zip locks, depending on the size of the projects and the amount of yarn, and put them in back into the cabinet so that I can grab them easily whenever I feel like working on them.
None of these projects are something that I need to finish very soon, except for the knitted sweaters that I was hoping on finishing before Christmas, but off course things got busy and I just couldn’t.

2014-01-11 17.35.20
Then I put my yarn into my yarn cabinet that you can see here. Now, I kind of need to go through it and organise it better. I will do that soon, maybe even tomorrow if I have the time.

Bits & Pieces – September 29th, 2013

I have so much catching up to do. Here, at home, at work, and with my passion projects. Oh well, it will all fall into place. If there is one thing I am learning, it is not to stress too much about things. Well, slowly I am learning this, and often fall of track and start to freak out about things I have no control over.

Birthday girl with her grandmother. Karítas is 8 years old today ❤
On September 14th, this amazing human turned 8 years old. She is incredible. Always happy. Easy to please. Always thankful, outspoken, opinionated and passionate. I can’t wait to watch her grow and mature more. I love you, Karítas Árný!

#yarnpadc catch up, Day 4: Stitches on a sock that still needs a parter #secondsocksyndrome
This sock is lonely and needs it’s partner. I also need to go through my WIP and UFO cabinet (yes, it is a cabinet and yes, it is full) and make a list of things I need and want to finish and frog the rest.

Record sunday
We finally got a record player! OH THE JOY!

Adrían came over and had pizza
My nephew, Adrían. Every time he comes over he wants something to eat. And every time he is oh so very happy to eat.

When I am sick, I get to use my Karítas as a pillow. That's love!
I was very sick this past weekend and am still trying to get rid of a bad cold. Karítas would be a great nurse and lets me use her as a pillow when I am feeling like crap.

Bits & Pieces

Hello! The weekend completely flew by me, so I did not update on Sunday like I try to do. My little sister turned 26 on Sunday so we had brunch at my parents house that was absolutely amazing.

Here are some photos for ya!

It's late, but #winter finally arrived to #reykjavik #iceland

Office view. Or no view.
Winter decided to visit us here in Reykjavík for 2 days last week. It left as soon as it came. This has been the strangest winter I have ever experienced.

Friday = pizza!
Every other Friday night, when the girls are home, we make pizza. Karítas loves to help out and puts the toppings on the pizza for her and her sister.

#crochet #blanket #afghan i love how it looks on her bed. And the fact that it is big enough for her to enjoy for a very long time
Karítas’s bed made with her wave blanket. I love it.

#rainbow #crochet #socks
I started a crocheted sock! One down, one to go. Pictures to follow when I finish the second one.

Confirmation photo @elmarfreyr @joigudlaugs
My confirmation photo. This was 20 years ago, thank you very much!

January 2011 SAL
And surprise! I have a stitching finish. I decided to start UFO Tuesdays back again at my Icelandic stitching group since most of us are doing much more knitting and/or crochet these days than stitching. So some of us are dedicating Tuesdays to working on our very neglected UFO’s. I finished this cute freebie from TraLaLa into a pincushion last night. Cute, isn’t it?

2012 – Finishes

Another year has ended. So weird how time speeds up year after year. Will a year feel like a week when I am 80?
It was over all a very good, but very busy year for me. New job, new challenges, new friends, new appreciations, new food, new goals. And off course, new knitting/crochet finishes. I do not have a single stitching finish though. Oh how the time change.

Knitting finishes:
Olearia by Georgie Hallam
Kalajoki by Tiina Seppälä
Cardigan for Valdi
Órói by Védís Jónsdóttir from Lopi #27
June Bunnies by Inese Andzane

Crochet finishes:
Various pieces for the Statue Yarnstorming
My Gay Pride piece.
Various pieces for the Yarn Bus.
A boob for Breast Cancer Awareness.

And a whoooooooole lot of organizing and brainstorming and other much smaller knitting or crochet projects that have not yet been published in their future form. I have some big ideas for this year, so stay tuned 🙂

Happy Holidays everyone! ⛄❄

Happy new year to you and yours. Thanks for reading in 2012 and I hope you will continue to visit in 2013.

Very Pink Kalajoki Socks

I love these socks, even though I made a mistake on the left sock, I still love them. I didn’t notice the stupid mistake until I was almost finished with the sock and there was no way that I was going to frog the whole thing and start over, so I just winged it and finished it. And they are pretty and pink and warm and do their job of warming feet pretty damn well.

They were a gift to my x-MIL and she loves them.

My new job is going great. Been there for about 3 weeks now and I love it. I got myself an iPhone as a “omgyayihaveanewjob” gift and I love it. My favorite app is Instagram and Stitch Minder (great for keeping count on your rows!). I have a set on flickr with my instagram photos if you want to check them out here. And here is one of my favorite photos, I took it this Saturday morning of me and the girls. I loooove lazy Saturdays with my girls. Best. Ever.

Nice Saturday morning <3

Happy New Year! I can’t believe another year is here. 2011 was in many ways a very good year and in other ways a pretty crappy one for me. Probably the biggest roller coaster year ever for me. It ended well though and 2012 started out well too so here is hoping for a good one!

Grandmother Shawl

My grandmother turned 80 years old yesterday. I knitted her this shawl for her birthday and gave it to her. She was happy with it, it is her favorite color and she is always cold so it will keep her shoulders warm.

Yarn: Kambgarn

The pattern is free on Ravelry – link here.

I have some other gifts and finished projects but they have not been given away yet so I can’t share just yet.

I also finished one sock on Friday. It has been on my needles for some months and just been a project that I grab every now and then, I am in no rush to finish it really but now that I have one done I am eager to get the other one done also. Hopefully I will not be bitten by the second sock syndrome as I love this pattern and the yarn. The finished sock is so pretty and nice to wear. Yeah, I have been wearing the one sock hahaha!

Also a hat that I knitted for Karítas that turned out to be too small. I am thinking of frogging it (or gifting it) and knitting another one for her that fits better. I still have the same yarn for another bigger hat and she loves this yarn, both the color and the softness.

Stripe Study and Socks

I started this shawl two days ago and am already over the halfway mark. It is going super fast while I watch True Blood. I am almost finished with Season 2 so no spoilers please. I got into it pretty late, but have watched the first two seasons over the past week or so.
I love the simple design of this shawl, and decided to make it with very fine weight yarn as I wanted to be light as air. I like how it is turning out and can’t wait to block it.

Stripe Study

I am also knitting these socks. They are not going as fast, but I do knit a little on them from time to time. Last night I finished the heel and started the gusset. These are my first “complicated” socks and I love how they are turning out. Am absolutely in love with the yarn! My friend Ágústa dyed it for me. I also have a skein in red that is just sitting around patiently to get used on another pretty pair of socks. They sure are addicting to knit!

Oh, I also got a new camera. I am absolutely thrilled with it. I got the Canon G12 and have been playing around with it a bit over the past couple of weeks. I am very happy with my Canon 400D, but this one is so much easier for carrying around as the 400D is so big. I still use it a lot, but this new G12 is my carry around camera these days, along with my new Diana Mini that I absolutely adore as well.

New Canon G12.
